Chapter of the National Organization for Women (Hollywood NOW): Print publication in

* The “Best Translated Science Fiction Award.” Prizes to be announced.

Four to six finalists will be chosen and
their stories read dramatically by celebrity guests in a special performance at LitFest Pasadena on Saturday, May 18,
2019 followed by an awards presentation. First, Second, and Third place winners will be chosen from the Finalists and all
Finalists as well as the Honorable Mentions will receive certificates recognizing their work. Special prizes will also be
presented by our partners, including the “Women Hold Up Half the Sky Award” presented by Artemis literary journal and
the Hollywood Chapter of the National Organization for Women (Hollywood NOW), and the award for “Best Translated
Science Fiction Story.” This award is for a story that has been translated into English, and will go to a writer and translator
team.

requirements:   adults age 18 and older from around the world

Contestants must be at least 18 years of age.
* Only one (1) submission is accepted per author.
* Stories must be 1,500 words maximum and no less than 500 words.
* Stories must be typed and submitted as a Microsoft Word document.
* Stories must include a cover page in the body of their submission email with the following information: Name,
address, email address, and phone number of the applicant; story title; story word count; and which prize the
author wishes to be considered for first (The Roswell Award, Women Hold Up Half the Sky Award, or Best
Translated Science Fiction Award). The attached document with the story must include the story title and text,
only, with no identifying details. If submitting for Best Translated Science Fiction Award, ensure that both the
author and translator names are included in the cover letter email, and indicate the language from which the story
was translated.
* Stories are eligible for only one prize, but stories submitted for the Women Hold Up Half the Sky Award and the
Best Translated Story Award will be considered for the First, Second, and Third Place Roswell Award prizes if
they do not win the prize category under which the story was originally submitted.
* Stories must not have any previous publication online or in print (this includes personal websites and social
media).
* Stories must be original work. Stories that feature characters, settings, or other defining features of any existing
media properties (books, film, TV, etc.), including fan fiction, will not be considered.
* Stories must be received by 11:59 p.m. on Monday, January 28, 2019.

deadline:  Manuscripts must be received during May and June 2019. That is, they must be postmarked on or after May 1 and on or before June 30.

prizes:   Winners receive a cash prize of $15,000, publication by the University of Pittsburgh Press, and support in the nation-wide promotion of their book.

requirements:   open to writers who have published a novel or a book-length collection of fiction with a reputable book publisher, or a minimum of three short stories or novellas in magazines or journals of national distribution. Digital-only publication and self-publication do not count toward this requirement.

The award is open to writers in English, whether or not they are citizens of the United States.

Eligible submissions include an unpublished manuscript of short stories; two or more novellas (a novella may comprise a maximum of 130 double-spaced typed pages); or a combination of one or more novellas and short stories. Novellas are only accepted as part of a larger collection. Manuscripts may be no fewer than 150 and no more than 300 pages. Prior publication of your manuscript as a whole in any format (including electronic) makes it ineligible.

During the submission period (May 1 – June 30) simply click the link above. You’ll be taken to our secure submittable.com web page where you’ll find easy-to-follow instructions:
Manuscripts must be double-spaced and pages must be numbered consecutively.
Each submission must include a list of all of the writer’s published short fiction work, with full citations. You will be given an opportunity to enter this information into a field in Submittable.
Manuscripts will be judged anonymously. Therefore, the author’s name, other identifying information, and publication information must not appear within the manuscript. Only your uploaded manuscript is visible to the judges.

FORMAT FOR MAIL-IN SUBMISSIONS
Manuscripts must be double-spaced on quality white paper, unbound, and pages must be numbered consecutively. Clean, legible photocopies on high quality white paper are acceptable.
Manuscripts will be judged anonymously. Each manuscript should have two cover pages: one listing the title of the manuscript and the author’s name, address, e-mail address (if available), and telephone number; and a second listing only the manuscript title. The author’s name, other identifying information, and publication information must not appear after the first cover page.
Manuscripts will not be returned. For results, please send a self-addressed stamped postcard.

prizes:   The Writer's Center awards $1,000 to the author of an exceptional first novel published in the previous calendar year.

requirements:    US only
1) All first novels published in print in 2018 are eligible, including those published by major and independent presses. Only American authors publishing in English are eligible. Non-eligible books include: short story collections, flash fiction, memoirs, biographies, and books published solely in electronic format.
2) Publishers (or authors) must submit three copies of their published novel along with a contact cover sheet indicating name, address, phone number, and e-mail address (no cover letter required). No galley proofs will be accepted.
3) Following the judging process, books will not be returned unless accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope with sufficient postage. Writer’s Center staff, board, and workshop leaders may not enter.

dateline:     The deadline for entries for each year’s award is June 15

prizes:   —$150 for a Story of the Week, with $400 each for the annual Top Five Stories of the Week.
—$150 to $350 for 500 to 2,000 word manuscripts.
—$350 to $1,000 for 2,000 to 15,000 word manuscripts.
—Rates for book-length works vary, depending on the length and nature of the work.
